Mental Fitness checkup

Prior to covid-19, the topic of Mental Health was a largely taboo topic, relegated to discussions about mental illness and fascination with the behaviour of the mentally ill. Along came the covid-19 pandemic bringing with it unfortunate but not unexpected physical suffering and death. However, soon after the first world-wide lockdowns were in progress, it became clear that another toll was simultaneously being experienced by a majority of people, one not as easily diagnosable as covid-19, but just as real.

People across the globe began experiencing frustration, fear, anxiety, anger, irritability, pain, a tendency to become withdrawn from others, and sleeplessness, to name a few. The term ‘Cabin Fever’ became popular, referring to the range of symptoms associated with being forced to stay indoors for extended periods of time.

The Mental Health of the entire population of planet earth received its sternest test in modern history.

The determinant of how well a person manages the emotional and mental impact of the pandemic is their level of Mental Fitness.

Think of Mental fitness as the emotional and mental equivalent of physical fitness. The following picture illustrates the concept:

Your level of Mental Fitness changes over the course of a lifetime. It can range anywhere from very unfit (mentally ill) to very fit (extremely resilient) just like physical fitness. You can take deliberate steps to improve your level of mental fitness. The goal of everyone should be to become as mentally fit as possible, as this will give you the best immunity against the stress caused by the pandemic.

What is your current level of mental fitness? Are you coping well? Do you feel in control of yourself and life happening around you? Are you as patient and understanding as you usually are? Are you sleeping well? Eating well?
